Under Stalin's orders, women who were suspected of dissent or caught in the ruthless purges were subjected to unimaginable horrors. These women were ripped from their everyday lives and thrust into the Gulag, where they faced not just hard labor and inhumane conditions, but also systematic abuse and exploitation as instruments of state terror.
Stalin sent anywhere from 14 to 25 million to the Gulag and executed hundreds of thousands more. Of these, 10 to 15% were women, most of whom were imprisoned not for their own offenses, but for the supposed crimes of their husbands.
Stalin’s rise to power ushered in a new era and new policies, many of which were unpopular amongst the political elite. But, as a despot, Stalin was not willing to heed criticism or advice, and all those who spoke out of turn were dealt with, disappeared, exiled, or killed - even his own wife.
