Scientific exploration of space and the study of the universe is something that has always fascinated me since my childhood and has never stopped having that effect on me.
So I've always been excited about this theme along with sci-fi movies and television series. But certainly the documentaries from National Geographic or even the Nova series (PBS) that really piqued my interest and in this context through the Criterion Collection I acquired my copy of the documentary-film "For All Mankind" 1989 directed by Al Reinert, which received 4K UHD treatment on April 26, 2022.
On this occasion I also decided to celebrate one of the best documentaries I have ever had the pleasure of watching about NASA Space Missions during the period of the race between the USA and the USSR to see who would get there first. Until the moon. The scientific advances achieved in that period are as incredible as it is almost impossible to imagine that it would be possible.
In July 1969, the space race ended when Apollo 11 fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s challenge of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” No one who witnessed the lunar landing will ever forget it. Twenty years later, Al Reinert constructed a documentary that imparts the unforgettable story of the twenty-four astronauts who participated in the Apollo mission to land on the moon—told in their words and in their voices, using the images they captured. With its awe-inspiring, otherworldly footage and a haunting atmospheric soundtrack by Brian Eno, For All Mankind stirs us with a profound sense of compassion for the “pale blue dot” that is our home, and it is still the most radical, visually dazzling work of cinema that has been made about this earthshaking event.
