One I drafted a while ago for neurodiversity awareness week (@autismunlim1ted @nationalautisticsociety @autismspeaks) - I’ve actually done this as I think the message fits well with #neurodiversity awareness week!
I have autism. I wasn’t diagnosed until October 2020, but I’ll be honest, whilst I have it on paper 📄, it means nothing. I’ve had no support with it, and I’ve known my whole life. Growing up I liked repetitive play. I have other disabilities and medical conditions - type 1 diabetes, Addison’s disease and autoimmune otosclerosis (in my left ear). And because of this and other reasons I struggle with my mental health.
I lack friends still and often feel so isolated but I do my best and “hold on”. I know my holding on, something will come my way. I am proud of what I’ve achieved with autism. I work with students who have a variety of disabilities including autism, I have a degree and a masters degree and always work my socks off.
I get more exhausted but I manage. Being neurodivergent for me is a positive as it makes me more determined to succeed despite the barriers I face. I want to work hard and try hard, so I will get there!
This song I dedicating to anyone with autism! Hold On and don’t give up! Autism awareness is so important, we may struggle with some things BUT THRIVE with others!
