Hi Pandies.

You are about to watch a side of my film making you haven’t seen before. It’s not the usual comedy skit that’s designed to make you laugh, in fact this may bring out the opposite affect. ‘Starlight’ will make you wonder about love, when someone falls in love, and what happens when someone is not allowed to love.

When I wrote Starlight, I was curious about relationships in my industry; the entertainment industry. I was astonished by the ones that worked. Puzzled by the ones that failed. And saddened with the ones that could have been. It made me wonder what kind of sacrifices one must make in order to find everlasting love in this industry. For it was hard to make relationships work in the real world, it surely must be almost impossible for them to work in my world. Because people have options, and are often faced with the question of ‘Am I satisfied?’. Which leads others to wonder ‘Am I enough?’.

And thus ‘Starlight’ was born.

Meet Jin. He’s an aspiring K-pop star. He’s not meant to fall in love. But he does. With Angel.

At different times in my career, I have walked in the footsteps of both Jin and Angel. And in the process of writing this story, I developed an understanding and empathy for each of them, resulting in the altruistic ending that I often wish could have played out in my own life. Had I known a little more, lived a little more, and loved a little more.

I chose to use a k-drama infused music video style of storytelling because at the time, I was heavily influenced by Netflix’s ‘Start Up’ and Taylor Swift’s short film/music video to her 10 minute song ‘All Too Well’. I thought this was a beautiful way to tell a hard breaking story. And sometimes we need a bit of sugar to surrender to the bitter.

The song you hear in this film is called ‘Million Worlds Apart’ by Megan Lee, and it’s an original piece she wrote for this short film. This film would not have been possible without her.

Starlight is for searchers, lovers and dreamers. If you’re like me, and a little bit jaded, I encourage you to open your heart to questions, curiosity and faith. In love. And in yourself.
