When the train reaches Schafbergspitze station, our first instinct is to look down at Wolfgangsee, marveling at how far we’ve climbed. Sitting on a bench in the lush meadow, gazing out over Wolfgangsee, it’s easy to feel like your worries are melting away, disappearing into the blue waters.
On Schafbergspitze (1,782m), our first stop was Himmelspforte, the charming mountain hut, with its breathtaking views of the lakes and towering peaks against a clear blue sky. Behind the peaks lies Attersee, the largest in the Salzkammergut region. This lake inspired Gustav Klimt, who spent his summers here creating 46 landscapes, capturing the shimmering waters in his unique style. Looking to the left, we see Lake Mondsee, meaning "Lake of the Moon" due to its crescent shape.
From Schafbergspitze, turning 180 degrees, we spot the Spinnerin(1,750m), crowned with the Gipfelmadonna peak. The mountain below appears to shrink into Wolfgangsee, but this lake stretches 10.5km and is over 100 meters deep. After a quick lunch at the Himmelspforte hut, we admired the panoramic view from the Schafberg Hotel. Just beyond, we noticed a sign warning that the path down to Mondsee and Attersee is dangerous—an enticing challenge for those who crave adventure.
We took a short walk along the trail, surrounded by Alpine wildflowers like goldenrod, yellow stream violets, and lavender asters. The cliffs were dizzying, but the scenery was absolutely stunning. Our main goal for coming to Schafberg was to trek, and though we didn't have time to complete the whole trail, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll, photographing the wildflowers and stunning views. Schafberg is a place where nature, art converge, making every step of the journey feel magical.
This video introduces our small journey in the hope that it will be of some help to those planning a trip to Austria. I hope you enjoy it, and please like and subscribe.
