Five were killed and 26 others injured in a six-vehicle pileup Saturday afternoon on an expressway section in southwest China's Chongqing.
The pileup happened after a bus crashed into a tanker truck loaded with chloromethane.
"The bus' rear crashed into the tanker truck. Our bus was on the middle lane. It was raining. The traffic in front[of us] was jammed. The bus driver slammed the brake only to see the bus spin, with the tail crashing into the tanker truck," said Lou Xiefang, a passenger on the bus.
All the injured have been sent to hospital, and five of them remained in critical conditions.
"One person had a severe craniocerebral injury, complicated with hemopneumothorax and partial splene rupture," said Li Bing, head of the emergency department of the Nanchuan District People's Hospital in Chongqing.
The others are in stable conditions, Li said.
The hospital has organized medical experts in Chongqing to have a consultation for the critical patients.
According to the hospital, blood bank and orthopaedics instruments are enough for treatment.
Local authorities confirmed there was no leak of chloromethane from the overturned tanker truck after the accident.
