Sepultura pasó por algunos cambios a lo largo de los años en que su formación original se mantuvo. Comenzaron con su debut Morbid Visions tocando una combinación de death thrash metal y continuaron con ese sonido hasta su cuarto álbum, Arise dieron un increíble salto creativo con su segundo álbum de larga duración, Schizophrenia de 1987. Aunque se grabó no mucho después de sus primitivos esfuerzos de debut dominados por la influencia de Celtic Frost entre otras de sus influencias (el EP Bestial Devastation de 1985 y el LP Morbid Visions de 1986), Schizophrenia introdujo un sonido completamente nuevo que fusionaba el thrash y el death metal, y todo ello respaldado por una música muy mejorada. y de composición de canciones en su maestría musical y el primer trabajo de producción con sonido verdaderamente profesional de la corta carrera de la banda. Las constantes giras, los ensayos y la incorporación del guitarrista principal Andreas Kisser al disco (su formación en guitarra clásica y sus memorables solos tuvieron un impacto inmediato) fueron claves para esta asombrosa transformación, pero el elevado nivel de competencia disponible es tal que casi parece milagroso al principio. Con sus riffs precisos y rápidos el triplete de apertura del álbum de "From the Past Comes the Storm" (precedido por un tema de introducción inspirado en Psycho), "To the Wall" y " Escape from the Void" resultó simplemente devastador para los oídos mas las otras canciones del álbum. Todo lo cual ayudó a que Schizophrenia fuera el primer lanzamiento de Sepultura en causar sensación entre los críticos y fanáticos internacionales, mientras preparaba el escenario para el lanzamiento inminente del grupo, Beneath the Remains sin duda un disco imprescindible en la discografía primigenia de la banda.
