Feb 14 2024 Sakurajima volcano erupted with plumes rising to 5,000 meters above the summit crater. The Volcanic lightning you see arises from colliding, fragmenting particles of volcanic ash (and sometimes ice), which generate static electricity within the volcanic plume.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said volcanic ashes fell in parts of Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings.
