Earthquakes have always been a risk in places like California, but now other parts of the US are susceptible to human-caused earthquakes. This map from the United States Geological Survey shows where you’re at risk.

Of the four million people living in earthquake-prone places, only half a million owe that to a risk of natural earthquakes. The rest, especially in Oklahoma and Kansas, need to worry about induced earthquakes that result from oil and gas operations (like fracking) injecting their waste water into deep underground wells. Not all of these injection wells cause earthquakes, though, and scientists are still trying to figure out exactly what triggers these quakes.
