Here, in proper video glory, is the episode of 'Tonight' (a sort of proto-Newsnight) shown on BBC 1 on Wednesday 28 March 1979. The programme came on air at 10:10 pm in the middle of the House of Commons division on Mrs Thatcher's motion of no confidence in James Callaghan's government.
Presented by Donald McCormick, with BBC Political Editor David Holmes in the House of Commons chamber and analysis from Robert McKenzie. With MPs all voting, Lords Carrington (Conservative) and Diamond (Labour) are the first to comment, followed by journalists Peregrine Worsthorne and John Cole. Then Robin Day chairs a discussion between Michael Foot (Leader of the House of Commons), Francis Pym (Shadow Foreign Secretary) and John Pardoe (Liberal Party).
