Armenian folk dances have evolved over thousands of years. They were generally danced in the village square during folk festivals or holidays and had symbolic meaning which far outdates modern religion. Participants were not professional dance groups, but the general public, without regard to gender, age or status. The dance was a means for the community to relate, to bond and to revive ancestral traditions.
