MARCH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH.
We at African American History Is AMERICAN History celebrate the many contributions to history, culture, and society made by women in America.
META VAUX WARRICK FULLER: A poet, painter, theater designer, and sculptor known for her trailblazing depictions of the Black American experience at the start of the Harlem Renaissance.
SHIRLEY CHISHOLM: An outspoken advocate for women and minorities, she was the first African American woman in Congress (1968…seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives) and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972).
ELLA BAKER: Truly, an unsung hero. She was a Civil Rights and human rights activist, organizer, teacher, and mentor whose career spanned more than five decades.
VIOLA LIUZZO: A Civil Rights activist. In 1965, she was murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan, becoming the only white woman to die for her efforts in the Civil Rights Movement.
