Some of the greatest wines in the world are grown on benchlands or terraced mountain vineyards. And on that list is Terra Valentine.
Winemaker Sam Baxter welcomes Cellar Angels to his new Spring Summit Ranch on Spring Mountain. We taste through the 2010 Marriage Bordeaux style blend, Terra Valentine’s first wine other than straight Cabernet Sauvignon, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot - bottled just in time for his wedding!
The Spring Mountain district in Napa Valley is high in elevation. The vines were grown between 1,000 and 2,000 feet. There’s an intensity to the wine you get from these mountain vineyards – shallow rocky soils, the vines struggle, leading to smaller clusters, smaller berries, more intensity in the wine. The cooling breezes cool down the Spring Mountain district vineyards in the afternoon.
Sam celebrates his 17th vintage as winemaker this year and now owns Terra Valentine. As cellar master in 1999 at Terra Valentine with father Phil Baxter as consulting winemaker, he helped build the business over the years with the Wurteles. With his heart in Spring Mountain, they found their 112 acre property and felt it was very serendipitous.
Theres something extra special about mountain grown fruit. Open a bottle of Terra Valentine and discover it for yourself. Watch our video interview with Sam Baxter to learn more.
