During the Christmas season we especially remember the glories of the Incarnation, but the nature of Christ has often been one of the primary issues of controversy throughout church history. The Nicene Creed, whose earliest form was crafted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, stood firm against heresies like Arianism that denied that Jesus was fully God and fully man. Since today is traditionally celebrated as “St. Nicholas Day,” and Nicholas is believed to have been one of those who resisted Arianism at the council of Nicaea, today is a perfect opportunity to include the Nicene Creed in our memory work and recitation. Actually, the Advent season in general is!
