The impact of the Indonesia currency crisis on drought-striken southern Sumatra is leading to rises prices and unemployment. Imminent food shortages and soaring costs are affecting areas that have endured the three year drought. Many people are finding it impossible to cope.
The costs of basic foods like rice, sugar and cooking oil has tripled in many areas in the past few months. In drought-hit areas the cost of imported rice is beyond the diminishing means of local families.
Pressure on rural towns is growing sharply as thousands of migrant workers return home from closing factories and lost construction jobs in the cities.
