Desde mediados del siglo XX las aguas del Ebro, que ocupan este espacio entre Cantabria y Burgos, han conformado un entorno de gran valor ambiental, lo que motivó su declaración como Refugio Nacional de Aves Acuáticas. El aspecto que tiene el embalse es el de un gran lago que se extiende a lo largo de 22 Kilómetros, rodeado de prados, bosques de robles y montañas. Es la mayor extensión de agua dulce de Cantabria, y uno de los mayores embalses de España, teniendo gran interés tanto paisajístico como ornitológico. También llamado Pantano del Ebro, está situado en el centro de Campoo Los Valles, y recoge aguas de los ríos Ebro, Hijar e Izarrilla. Con una altura máxima de 34 m, y una extensión de 6.253 Hectáreas, es capaz de albergar 541 hectómetros cúbicos, y desde él se regulan las aguas del Río Ebro.
Disfrutar de la naturaleza en toda su dimensión es la opción perfecta para los que visitan el embalse. Recrearse con las vistas, fotografiarlas, realizar rutas de senderismo o en bicicleta o disfrutar con el avistamiento de aves, son solo algunas de las posibilidades que este entorno natural nos ofrece.
Para los amantes de las aves y la fauna aquí no se van a aburrir, ya que hay mucha variedad y cantidad.
Muy recomendable que visitemos el Centro Ornitológico del Embalse del Ebro, situado en el municipio de Campoo de Yuso, entre las localidades de La Población y Lanchares.
