Last time I tried to go inside the Oroville Chinese Temple, I WAS DENIED (it was closed due to COVID)!!! Recently, I was fortunate enough to find someone who can get me inside, pending a monetary transaction, which was well within my humble budget. Turns out, there were tons of other Chinese Temple Enthusiasts that wanted to get inside this historic temple as well. What's inside this temple? What will we see? What can we learn from what's inside??

During the California Gold Rush, Oroville became a popular place of settlement due to the discovery of gold in the near vicinity. The Chinese established a Chinatown along the banks of the Feather River, and erected a Chinese Temple in 1863 to satisfy their religious needs. In 1907, a huge flood destroyed Oroville along with Chinatown, and most inhabitants were forced to move elsewhere. The remaining Chinese in Oroville managed to maintain the Chinese Temple, but the City of Oroville eventually took ownership of the complex in 1937. The Temple is still used as a place of worship, though most of the complex has been converted to a museum where Chinese History Enthusiasts like myself can learn about the rich history of Oroville's Chinese Community.

According to their website, the Temple is open Wednesdays and Sundays from 12-2pm, but it's recommended to call ahead of time to confirm due to the uncertainties of the current pandemic.
