Thousands of trade unions members took to the streets of Rome Saturday to protest against the new government budget plans for 1997.
The Italian government wants to slash the public deficit to allow Italy to qualify for the European single currency.
The streets of Rome were packed Saturday with trade union members.
They even brought along their children to protest against government changes in the 1997 budget.
The budget is based on cuts in spending and new taxes.
But there will also be an unspecified contribution from treasury dealings, in order to slash the public deficit to allow Italy to quickly qualify and participate in a single currency.
The plan would reduce the deficit by more than 41 (b) billion dollars.
