Neil Gow was born in Scotland in 1727. He was known as Scotland’s most famous and celebrated fiddler in the 18th Century. He was given patronage by the Duke of Atholl which secured his musical career. Niel was married twice and outlived both of his wives. His first wife, Margaret Wiseman, died in 1766. His second wife, Margaret Urquhart, died in 1807. It was the lament that Niel composed for his second wife that became his best-known melody. That lament is the one heard in this video. Of course, it makes sense to include fiddle on the arrangement of a tune that was originally composed on the fiddle. We felt that piano and guitar would work well with the fiddle on this arrangement.
