STORYLINE:
Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot asked for more time on Friday to decide how to plead in his trial for the murder of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman in 2010.
His case was postponed until January 11.
A panel of three judges heard the prosecutor lay out the case against van de Sloot in the killing of Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room on May 30, 2010.
The trial of the 24-year-old defendant gathered a large crowd of reporters outside the prison of San Juan de Lurigancho.
The murder happened five years to the day after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, a 19-year-old from Alabama who was celebrating her high school graduation on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba and was seen leaving a nightclub with Van der Sloot.
Flores' father, Ricardo Flores, said he and the family were hoping to discover the real reason for his daughter's death.
Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence on murder and theft charges, but the family are hoping for a life sentence.
The family is convinced the defendant was hard up for cash and knew the Peruvian business student had been winning at the casino.
Edward Alvarez who represents the Flores family told the media minutes before the start of the trial that he hoped the accused would finally start talking.
"It is time for him to say what happened," he said.
The Dutchman, who in several interviews described himself as a pathological liar, has changed his version of events many times.
"Can I have some more time to think about this?" he asked.
