READ ALONG TO PRACTICE YOUR ENGLISH AND TO LEARN THE MEANING OF WHAT A BUMMER AND BUMMED OUT: So sometimes, someone will tell you that something bad happened to them or something disappointing happened to them, and you can respond in English by saying, what a bummer. When you say what a bummer to someone, you're basically saying that you feel bad for them. Maybe your brother comes and says to you, someone stole my bike yesterday. That is a bad situation. That is not a nice thing for your brother. In order to show sympathy, in order to show that you agree that something bad has happened to him and that you feel bad for him, you might say, oh, what a bummer. When you say what a bummer, it's just your way of showing support to someone who has had something bad happen to them. Maybe a friend of yours comes and says, I studied really hard for my English test, but I still failed, you could respond by saying, oh, what a bummer, I feel bad for you. So, what a bummer means I feel bad.
Hey, when you have something happen that isn't very nice, you can feel bummed out. This is a similar phrase. So when your brother says that he has had his bike stolen, you could say what a bummer, but your brother probably is feeling bummed out. In English, when we say that we are feeling bummed out, it means that we are feeling disappointed or sad about a situation that we are in. So, to review, you might say to someone, what a bummer if something bad has happened to them, and that person is probably feeling bummed out in that situation.
