a four corners veteran just received the purple heart and bronze star he earned more than six decades ago. liz lastra spoke to the world war two veteran and his wife -- and has their story. it was world war two--battle of the bulge--and army infantry russel aulston was 26 when germans hit him with shrapnel. "when i hit the ground...bam...it hit me in the hip. the first thing i thought about was to see if i could move my leg" for six weeks his girlfriend -lolita -- who he later married --didn't know he was being held in a german prison. "he was missing in action...so we didn't know what happened but i just knew he was alive" after 66 years, the vet -- who lives near cortez, in yellow jacket colorado -- still has a reminder from the day he was captured. "i've still got that metal in my hip" but he never got his purple heart and bronze star. russell's grandson, darrell, found out his grandfather was discharged before president roosevelt signed an executive order awarding the bronze star to certain world war two vets. his grandson spent a lot time getting everything together so that he would get the bronze star and purple heart. "so many people don't get their medals and then the family already gets them after they've already passed away" an emotional russel still can't put into words what it feels like to finally be honored. "...i don't know ..." in yellow jacket ...liz lastra kob eyewitness news four. next sunday..... the aulston's will join their family for a special ceremony at their church honoring russel.
