STORYLINE
A team of suicide bombers in Afghanistan tried to storm a US military base near the border with Pakistan on Monday, in a daring insurgent attack on a major American installation, officials said on Tuesday, as NATO sustained its highest death toll in a single incident in three years when ten French soldiers reportedly were killed in fierce fighting with militants outside Kabul.
Six suicide bombers attacked the US base and three detonated their vests, NATO officials said.
Afghan officials said at least 13 militants died in the attack, including six suicide bombers.
General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman, said Afghan soldiers, aided by US troops, chased and surrounded a group of insurgents.
Afghan Army Commandos "killed ten suicide bombers before their attack," he told a press conference.
Six Afghan and three allied soldiers were injured during the operation, he said.
NATO offered a slightly different account, saying three suicide bombers detonated their vests and that three bombers were shot dead.
NATO said seven attackers in total were killed.
The base is just a few miles (kilometres) from Pakistan's border. Salerno is the second largest US base in Afghanistan, after the main base at Bagram.
