The Schuberth C5 has been in the market for around six months. It’s a way better helmet than the C4. There have been a few niggles, but not much to write home about. One of the upgrades on the C5 was meant to be changeable cheekpads and headliners, but until now they haven’t been available. Well, now they’re here. But Schuberth has gone about this facility in a very different way to, say, Shoei or Arai.
The good news is that, with the C5, you can get different thicknesses of liner for both the side of the head and the back of the neck. And in theory this gives us even greater scope for fine tuning than there is with either of the Japanese brands. And that’s because, with Shoei or an Arai, a thicker headliner is thicker all the way round. Ditto a thinner one.
But the rest of the news is not so good. First, taking the pads out and putting them back in is not that straightforward. It’s not rocket science, but with the AROS straps that connect the chin strap to the back of the helmet, changing the internals is a bit fiddly and a little time consuming.
One of our disappointments, however, is that you can only change the side pads and neck pads on three of the six available sizes: Medium (57), Large (59) and Extra Large (61). These sizes account for the majority of sales, but it still leads us to wonder whether Schuberth is only paying lip service to custom fitting. The cheekpads, by contrast, can be changed for thicker or thinner ones in all six sizes. Which is good news.
There’s another issue. Schuberth has packaged the liners into sets that comprise two side pads and one neck pad. Now these sets are designed to allow you to make the helmet rounder or more oval. But we don’t think this works, because sometimes you may only need a neck pad or the side pads, and not both. Even worse, if you want thicker side pads and a thicker neck pad, you may need split two packs! But the biggest issue is this. You have to pay for these packs, whereas Shoei and Arai operate a free exchange programme.
Now, here at Motolegends we have decided to do two things. First, will be splitting the Schuberth liner packs so that we can offer the side of head pads and the neck pads separately. Secondly, if you come to the shop for a fitting, we won’t charge for these components. We will simply absorb the cost which, in some cases, could mean a saving of just short of £100.
Frankly, even though the internal liners on Shoeis and Arais are free, most retailers still don’t offer custom fitting on these helmets, but given the cost of the internals on a Schuberth you can be pretty sure that almost no retailer will be offering custom fitting on the C5.
To us, the moral of the tale is simple. If you want a custom fitting on a C5, you need to come and see us in Guildford. We’ll do our best to get it to work on you. If, for any reason, it won’t, we’ll look at the Neotec; and failing that we may try the somewhat rounder C3 Pro. Very rarely will one of them not work.
