On December 7th of 1941, a date that will live in infamy, the empire of Japan unleashed a surprise attack upon Pearl Harbor. The attack was intended to take the US Pacific Fleet out of commission for at least 6 months to allow Japan to consolidate its conquests. However the US was able to operate immediately after because of two large reasons: 1) the shallow water allowed for the quick repair of the damaged warships and 2) the aircraft carriers were not present during the attack. The Japanese also failed to destroy the repair facilities, docks and oil tanks. If they had managed this, the US would have most likely pulled back to the eastern coast and lost the ability to operate for well over a year in the Pacific.
