In this recipe we show how moong dal is prepared from stovetop. This can also be easily made with a traditional pressure cooker, whatever tools you have at home!
There are many variants in cooking dal (split lentils). For example, the quality of the lentils, the softness of water, whether the dal is soaked or not, and the intensity of heat – either in a pressure cooker or on a stovetop - will all make a difference. Modern cooking promotes that, both, whole lentils and split lentils can be cooked from dry grain to finished dish in about an hour with a pressure cooker. While this can be done, traditional cultures took great care to soak nuts, legumes, and seeds of all kinds before eating them. Though all these are packed with vitamins and minerals, their substantial nutrients are most accessible by being either soaked or soaked and sprouted. In this dish, the moong dal is unique to this standard and is only rinsed well before cooking. Because the dal is split- and quite small on it's own- it can be fully cooked in about 20 minutes.
If you begin cooking dal regularly in your home, a pressure cooker can be a great helper! It saves on time and fuel. A 3-quart pressure cooker is great for a family of about four.
