Having some reserve power on tap on the trail is always a good thing, but how do you actually hook up an extra battery to your rig? On this episode of Overland at Home, we’ll show you how to make a one of the first overlanding mods for any rig: upgrading your single battery or adding a DIY dual battery setup. We'll show you how to do it all on our Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and Toyota Land Cruiser.

When it come to picking the right battery for your car, a lot of it comes down to how much room you have. If you have a bit more room, a group 31 battery is a great choice, but if you’re cramped for space, a group 34 is ideal. No matter what you do, upgrading your battery from a lead acid battery to a deep-cycle AGM battery will let you have much more power available for winching or anything else you’ll need to do in an emergency. It's for this reason that we say a battery upgrade is one of the best off road mods you can make and a new battery is one of the best pieces of overlanding gear for beginners.

We run through three different setups, going from the least labor intensive to the most: single starting battery swap, front and rear dual battery and a double front dual battery. This will take you all the way up to a full dual battery system installation, giving your truck the best power option available.

There are many easy overlanding mods and easy off road mods, but one of the absolute easiest is swapping in a new battery. For the single battery swap, all you really need to do is swap out your old one with a new battery, like the Optima AGM battery we used. You’ll instantly start getting better performance and have more power on tap. This options is great if you just want an easy battery install.

When you move up to a dual battery setup, you’ll need to use an ACR to make sure that your starting battery is fully protected. For our front and rear dual setup, we plugged the new front battery into the ACR, created a mount in the rear for our secondary battery, wired it up to the ACR and were good to go.

For the double front dual battery setup, we used two group 34 batteries from Optima and a wiring and harness setup from SDHQ that was perfectly designed for this situation. Of course, for you to be able to have both batteries up front in the engine bay, there needs to be a spot to place it, and our 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro had slot that worked great.
