Tens of thousands rallied across Australia on Invasion Day – how Indigenous people refer to Australia Day. Protesters are calling for the date of Australia Day to be changed or for the public holiday to be abolished entirely as large crowds gathered in every major Australian city to protest Australia’s lasting British colonial legacy.
Australia Day marks the arrival of the British First Fleet, which landed on the continent’s shores in 1788. For Australia’s Aboriginal population, this day marks the start of a brutal period of genocide and forced expulsion from their land, which they have occupied for millennia.
Since at least 1938, January 26 has also been a day of protest and mourning against the start of British colonization as the country’s Aboriginal population continues to face widespread discrimination and negligence at the hands of the state.
