Worms need grit to help process what they eat. A lot of materials are suitable, such as crushed eggshells, fine sand, coffee grounds, rock dust, or any other hard gritty substance that won't harm the worms.
In our feed, there is already a good amount of crushed eggshells and we have been adding fine sand periodically but good sand is expensive. If we want more control and uniformity we need to find a steady supply of grit we can add to each feed. The goal is to find inert rock dust, and I think I just did!
A good steady supply of grit is key to getting worms to eat faster and to remain healthy.
