Join us on a walkthrough tour of Cirencester Town in Gloucestershire. With a population of approx.20,000, this historic Market Town is known as the capital of the Cotswolds.
This beautiful town is home to the Church of St John The Baptist, and is location of the tallest Yew hedge in the World! Which stands at an amazing 40ft and is only trimmed once a year.
Then you have the amazing Cirencester Park, next to Bathurst manor with the ever stretching 5 mile long Broad avenue.
It is also the home of the Royal Agricultural University, which is the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world, founded in 1840!
The Town lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswolds, even though the population is not that big.
Initially known by the Romans as 'Corinium Dobunnorum' it was used as a Roman Fort and was a thriving centre of the Wool trade. But, those days are long gone and now it is home to great variety of little independent shops. From your typical local butchers to chic cafes and pastry shops.
It has a great selection of pubs and restaurants, has a selection of little arcades and both Indoor and outdoor markets, ideal if you want to find those extra special gift or some locally produce.
We visited here in January '22, when it was just getting to the end of the many COVID restrictions that had been governing the country for the past 2 years, but even then, for a Saturday in a known market town, it was not that busy.
With places such as The Slaughters, Bibury, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, being a 30 minutes drive away, this is certainly a beautiful town that is definitely worth a visit.
