Refugees Use New Route
Refugees heading to western Europe are entering Croatia after crossing the border with Serbia.They began heading there after Hungary imposed a border crackdown. Police say they’ve registered 6,000 asylum seekers so far. Meanwhile, Slovenia has announced it plans to close its border with Hungary for at least 10 days. Earlier on Thursday, police in Hungary fired tear gas at refugees trying to cross the razor wire fence it built along the border with Serbia.
Military Announces Coup
The military has announced a coup after deposing the interim government. Military officials made the announcement on state-run television. An official said a national democracy council had been put in place and would ‘organise inclusive elections’. The military had earlier detained the interim president, Michel Kafando and interim Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida,
Strong Earthquake Strikes
A magnitude 8.3 earthquake has struck just off the coast. Its epicentre was 200 kilometres north of the capital, Santiago. At least eight people have been killed. One million people were evacuated after the quake caused a tsunami that flooded coastal cities. The quake triggered at least four aftershocks. Some were as strong as magnitude 6.0. Authorities issued tsunami warnings for Chile, as well as Peru, Hawaii, California and New Zealand. But some warnings have since been lifted.
PM Indicted
Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been indicted on charges of forgery, money-laundering and as an accessory to tax evasion. He’s accused of forging expense claims for 45 thousand dollars from the law firm of a political ally. Ponta is the first Romanian prime minister to be indicted while in office. He’s denied the charges and refused to resign. He’s accused prosecutors of “manipulating public opinion.”
