Sometimes, the past isn't nice and regular like we want to remember it. Sometimes, it's all twisted and irregular and you just have to deal with it. Sorry.
Update and correction: I recently learned (thanks to a kind commenter) that you can't put a "to" before "may" in English to make it an infinitive. I'm sorry for that.
