➟ The benefits of "the four immeasurables" for addicts
First, meditation teacher Alon, co-founder of Hope Rehab Center in Thailand, gives a brief introduction into Buddhism. She focuses on "the four immeasurables" or "the four miracles of the mind" how she calls them. Those can help to heal loneliness, insecurity, hatred, anger & resentments - things, addicts usually struggle with a lot.
"The four immeasurables" are:
1) loving-kindness (also watch our related YouTube video on "Meditation: How this practice helps you deal with addiction, anxiety, insomnia and depression" - [ Ссылка ])
2) compassion
3) joy - being content with who you are (acceptance)
4) equanimity
Alon also explains "the noble eightfold path" (which is also called "the middle way") and how it's used in addiction treatment at Hope Rehab.
"The noble eightfold path":
1) right will
2) right thinking
3) right action - e.g. non-violence, no drugs, no alcohol, etc.
4) right speech - e.g. no gossiping, no war stories
5) right livelihood
6) right effort
7) right mindfulness
8) right concentrations - meaning: look at your suffering; what's the root of it?
That's a very quick summary of the heart of the Buddha's teachings.
Senior counsellor Chris, who is a heroin addict in recovery himself, talks about his personal experience with Buddhism and how it helped him break the cycle of addiction and achieve long-term recovery.
Chris struggled to understand himself and life from very early on. In his attempt to figure himself out he started smoking weed. Eventually, he discovered Buddhism which gave him the answers he was looking for.
The Buddha's teachings helped him understand and accept that life is suffering, that life can be painful at times. He realised that often we cause our own suffering - e.g. through attachment (being attached to negative feelings and thoughts or a certain outcome.)…
Chris also learned to not identify with the pain and to accept that nothing is permanent and everything changes constantly.
He came to the conclusion that there’s nothing out there that’s gonna fix us - especially not alcohol or drugs. Through grounding himself and utilising the Buddha's teachings to deal with the suffering in his life in a more skilful way he eventually broke the cycle of addiction and achieved long-term recovery.
Buddhism and its teachings can be a game changer for addicts - especially for those who struggle with the 12-step programs. However, there's no one-size-fits-all. That's why Hope Rehab uses a variety of approaches based on individual needs when it comes to addiction treatment.
