Just imagine you are throwing an object towards the sky and it doesn’t come back. Is it even possible? If we ignore the atmospheric drag, then the answer is yes. All you need is a sufficient projection velocity, i.e. Escape velocity. The minimum velocity required for a free, non-propelled object to escape from the gravitational influence of a massive body to reach an infinite distance from it eventually is called Escape velocity.
