Do you know where to fit your carbon monoxide alarm?
Find out the best areas in this video.
Because carbon monoxide mixes with the air, it is recommended to install carbon monoxide alarms at knee level. This is because it is the approximate height of a sleeping person’s nose and mouth.
If you have young children or pets that could play with your detectors, you can move them up to chest height.
Another option is to place them in a hard-to-reach area. You must bear in mind that a CO detector should never be blocked by furniture, curtains or other objects.
The best rooms to install a carbon monoxide alarm are:
- Any bedroom. If you only have one alarm place it in landing or near where everyone’s bedrooms are.
- Any room where occupants spend a lot of time
- Any room containing a flueless or open-flued appliance
If you live in a studio apartment, a carbon monoxide alarm should be located as far away from the cooking appliances as possible but close to where people sleep.
If the appliance is in a room not normally used, for example a cupboard, the detector should be put just outside it so that the alarm may be heard more easily should it sound.
