The man allegedly responsible for the fire at the country's Parliament has made his first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
The 49-year-old suspect, identified as Zandile Mafe, was arrested after being caught with the stolen property with which he gained entry to the parliamentary precinct. Mafe faces charges relating to the National Key Point Act.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape, Eric Nta-baza-lila, says the suspect also faces two counts of arson, possession of an explosive device and destruction of essential infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Mafe will remain in custody until his next court appearance.
