There's something to be said for keeping it simple. As the first game for Sega's 16-bit Genesis, Altered Beast doesn't have time to bother with stupid things like naming its heroes or explaining why this Game of Thrones cosplayer is suddenly into furries. Instead, Sega wants you to marvel at the swamp stage and not hate the game when you get your ass kicked by this rhinoceros.
As you might have guessed already, Altered Beast doesn't have a fancy name for its power-ups. Dubbed the Power-up Orb, these useful items float around the screen until somebody picks them up. They come from kicking a blue wolves, and will eventually turn our hero into one of four unique beasts.
While the idea of turning into an animal may seem cool at first, it leads to a few questions. I mean, if I can turn into a dragon, then why wouldn't I always be a dragon? And why does the same orb turn me into four different types of animals? And really, why are there only four animals when there are five stages? It's as if Sega knew Altered Beast was garbage and threw in the towel early. No wonder nothing has names and the voice acting sounds like this
