So, what happens is whenever an iPhone sends a text message then it will try to send the text message in the form of iMessage. But this iMessage feature will work only between two apple devices. So, what you have to do is, you have to go down and there is an option here "Send as SMS". Make sure that this feature is enabled so that whenever iMessaging is not available in another device then the text message will go in the form of normal SMS.
