Are too many women having double mastectomies in the name of aggressive cancer treatment? Surgical oncologist Dr. Edibaldo Silva believes many of the double mastectomies done each year do not provide women with additional protection. Dr. Silva says a woman with cancer in one breast only has a 1-3% chance of getting cancer in the other breast. "A patient's outlook and survival is not determined by the removal of a normal organ, it's determined by the stage of the initial cancer," said Dr. Silva.
