After dusk at the South Shore Line's Carroll Avenue Shops in Michigan City, Indiana, South Shore Freight GP38-2s #2003 and 2000 start up for the night's work. Eastbound South Shore Line train #509 crosses the South Shore Freight's ex-NS, exx-Nickel Plate line into town and arrives at the Carroll Avenue station. After emptying its load of passengers from points west and Chicago, the train is split in two, with the first three cars heading into the yard to tie up for the night, and the latter three cars continuing on to South Bend. Once the interurban has cleared, South Shore Freight GP38-2s #2003 and 2000 head out, then back across the old NKP line, running under the wire to Burns Harbor, where they will switch out the US Steel mill there.
