The Sri Lankan lawmakers elected six-time PM Ranil Wickremesinghe as the next President of the crisis-hit country. Wickremesinghe had been serving as interim President after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned as President. Wickremesinghe secured 134 of the total 219 votes that were found valid. After his victory, Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka is in a very difficult situation and that there are big challenges ahead. Protesters gathered outside the Presidential Secretariat, soon after he was elected for the top job. Apart from addressing the unprecedented economic crisis, Wickremesinghe will have to rebuild the public trust in the political system.
