(20 Oct 2014) US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday the US decided to airdrop weapons and ammunitions to "valiant" Kurds fighting Islamic State extremists in the Syrian border town of Kobani because it would be "irresponsible" and "morally very difficult" not to support them.
Speaking in the Indonesian capital on Monday, Kerry told reporters that the Obama administration understood ally Turkey's concerns about supplying the Kurds, who are linked to a Kurdish group that Ankara fiercely opposes.
But he said the situation is such in the besieged town of Kobani that the supplies were deemed absolutely necessary in a "crisis moment".
An insurgent group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has fought a three-decade war, initially for independence and later for autonomy and greater rights for Kurds.
Turkey's Foreign Minister said on Monday that his country is helping Iraqi Kurdish forces cross into Kobani "to give support" to fellow Kurdish fighters defending the Syrian town against Islamic State militants.
Kerry also met Philippine Foreign Minister Alberto del Rosario and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to Jakarta.
