(27 Mar 2020) As Spain surpassed two weeks of lockdown on Friday, the streets of Barcelona remained vastly empty amid the coronavirus crisis.
Tourists who normally flock to the city's iconic Arc de Triomf, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and La Rambla had disappeared, leaving the tourist attractions virtually empty.
Only dog walkers could be seen out for a stroll.
A beach in the city was also deserted with just police patrolling the area.
Spain is the hardest hit by the new coronavirus in Europe.
The country has recorded more than 56,000 cases of COVID-19 with at least 4,100 deaths, according to John Hopking University.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
