(22 Sep 2018) A thousand military parachutists dropped from the sky on Saturday at the historic drop zone in Ginkelse Heide in the Netherlands in memory of the the largest airborne battle in history.
The soldiers who participated in the 'Falcon Leap' exercise were from eight different countries including Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Poland, and the United States.
The event marks 74 years since the Battle of Arnhem in World War II.
Launched on 17 September in 1944, Operation Market Garden was a massive but ultimately unsuccessful World War II air and land mission aimed at opening a land route for the Allied forces into Nazi Germany's industrial heartland.
During the mission, more than 2,000 British and Polish parachutists landed at the Ginkelse Heide.
The operation's strategy was to use thousands of American, British and Polish paratroopers to secure key bridges in the Netherlands whilst land-based troops could push toward the east.
The mission largely failed due to tougher than expected German resistance and overstretched Allied supply lines.
