The opening line, "My grandfather went down with the Montevideo", refers to Australia's worst maritime disaster in history, when the Japanese merchant ship Montevideo Maru, pressed into service as a military transport, was sunk by American submarine USS Sturgeon, unaware that most of the people aboard the Montevideo Maru were Australian prisoners of war and civilians.
Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett's grandfather was one of the 1,054 people who died.
"Montevideo" has a different personal relevance to me: my grandfather, along with his wife and daughter (my mother), fled Nazi Germany in 1938 and ended up living in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he spent the rest of his days.
