Research studies have determined that racism causes sickness, known as social determinants of health. That is, racism was identified as a major contributory factor in death, disease, and life expectancy, particularly among African-Americans who experience the greatest rates of racial and economic disparities.
As such, approximately 20 states and local governments, most notably in Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, have declared racism as a public health crisis. These governments have either passed or are considering legislation to name racism as a public health epidemic.
Racial disparities involve susceptibility to disease; disability; and death at higher rates due to low socioeconomic functioning including poverty; homelessness; low wage employment; impoverished communities; food insecurity; healthcare inequities; unequal access to education; police brutality, pregnancy and birth defects, mental health, substance use disorders, and so on.
