The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop is a 13-mile road that displays a wide variety of beautiful landscapes within a short period of time. From the red sandstones of the Calico Basin on the east to the red striped wooded mountains on the west, this is almost like a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. If you’re new to the Las Vegas area, exploring this loop by electric bicycle will give you a great idea of what hiking trails might be interesting to come back to. Even after living in the Las Vegas area for over 14 years now, I’ve never actually been on this scenic drive before. However, the beauty hasn't gone unnoticed to many tourists who come for the hiking, cycling, and rock climbing on a daily basis. This is located just a couple miles from the edge of Summerlin, just west of the outskirts of civilization. Red Rock is truly the natural jewel that Las Vegas residents take serious pride in preserving and this unique environment will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime. While I’ve explored places such as First Creek Trail and Calico Basin in the past, which are both parts of Red Rock, I had no idea that the scenic loop was basically the heart of the hiking scene in Vegas. Many trailheads to stunning locations such as Lost Creek Trail, Icebox Canyon, Pine Creek Canyon, Turtlehead Mountain and Calico are all found here on this loop. These are some of the most talked about hiking locations by locals and I was able to get a good up close look just by driving by them with my electric bike rental from EZRideLV. I felt that the bike was a perfect way for me to see what Red Rock has to offer and to decide for myself which ones were actually worth coming to in the future. This week, I needed a break from hiking, so I decided to take the 22-mile bike ride off into this remote, beautiful land.
After comprehending the importance of the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop for my website, I reached out to EZ Ride Las Vegas which is an electric bike rental company that operates in the Summerlin area on the western edge of town. The first thing you would do to reserve a bike would be to call them and see if there’s a bike available during the time you’d like to go riding. Red Rock is visited by 2 million tourists each year and if you break that down, that’s nearly 5,500 people each day! So giving them a call in advance is much appreciated. Laurent, the owner from Paris, will meet you near Summerlin but he is also willing to pick up tourists from their hotels who are staying on the Las Vegas Strip. He’ll bring the bikes in a pickup truck, like you see in the photo below, and provide you with gloves, a helmet, and enough cold water for your journey through Red Rock or wherever you chose to explore. The truck carefully handles multiple bikes at a time, so having a group of 5 people should be no problem. I chose EZ Ride Las Vegas since this rental bike company is within a close distance to the Scenic Loop and I really was curious what all the rage about. Since Red Rock Canyon is controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, no guided tours are allowed. So this gives you a chance to explore on your own without the feeling of a tour guide holding you back! Laurent let us test out the E-bikes before heading west on Charleston which turns into Blue Diamond. They are well-maintained and in great condition. They almost seem as if they are brand new and I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a fun journey! I’m not too big into cycling, mostly because I don’t live near too many biking trails and because my vehicle isn’t big enough to carry them. But, by calling EZ, I had easy access to possibly the best cycling route in Nevada which bike enthusiasts from around the world are dying to get to.
The bikes come in different sizes and they’ll be sure to have the right bike that suits your build and height. I originally thought that the bike had a button or a handle that would automatically make me go without having to pedal at all. That wasn’t exactly the case and pedaling is indeed required. At first, if you don't ride too often, you might not notice a huge difference but, when you begin to start flying past other cyclists, you'll see the power the electricity is giving you. The other bikes on the route simply couldn’t compete with us as we were zooming past them each time. I would suggest that you still be in fairly decent shape with a little experience handling bikes before you take on the entire scenic loop during summer. It’s still great for beginners and operates like a normal bike.
