Like the ambient temperature, the racing action was hot at the 41st Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. The week-long event is the largest motorsports event in the world, boasting over 1200 competitors spread throughout 71 classes. The Solo community is known for blending serious competition with fun and this year's event was just that.
Two distinct courses dotted the Lincoln AirPark tarmac. The East course was long and flowing - favoring horsepower. The West course was tight and shorter - full of transitions and slaloms. Like years past, the difference between courses allowed for certain cars and drivers to excel where they might not have on the opposing course. Competitors are given three runs on both the East and West course, with each driver‚s single best time on each course added together to determine the Champion.
Seven drivers completed the requirements for the prestigious Triad Award during the week, and former IndyCar and Formula One pilot Eliseo Salazar participated in the National Championships as part of a team of drivers that made the trip from Chile for the event.
Sunny skies and a cool breeze greeted the first wave of competitors on Tuesday. Perfect temperatures and afternoon blue skies capped off Wednesday. OPR continued to fly on Thursday as the courses were lit up by the blazing sun. The skies opened up just enough to cool the tarmac during the final heat of the day, but cleared just as quickly. Sunny skies were overhead on the final day of competition and left little to be desired at the closing of the 41st Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships.
