Psychiatry vs Psychology - What's the Difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist

Psychiatrists and psychologists differ primarily in their training backgrounds. Physicians who are psychiatrists have medical degrees and obtained MD or DO degrees, while psychologists have Ph.D. psychology degrees or PsyD degrees and are trained clinical psychologists. As a result of their degree programs and training backgrounds, psychiatrists are able to practice medicine, prescribe medications, and perform medical procedures, whereas psychologists are not. They both treat patients with mental health issues and spend time counseling them. A psychiatrist and a psychologist are both mental health professionals who have been trained to understand how the brain works, the diagnostic criteria for various mental disorders, and treatment protocols.

Hospitals and clinics also employ both types of workers. Psychiatrists prescribe medications to treat mental illnesses, while psychologists use psychotherapy (also called talk therapy) to treat conditions and are considered more counselors.
Psychologists and psychiatrists often work together to help patients. In the initial visit, a psychiatrist may diagnose a patient and prescribe medications. Psychiatrists may then refer patients to psychologists for talk therapy. It is often beneficial for patients to see both types of providers. Psychologists and psychiatrists are sometimes referred to as therapists or counselors.
