@Militiahistoria
Winston Churchill had a dual British-American heritage, as his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American from Brooklyn, Churchill was also the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States, a recognition granted by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
In 1899, while working as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War in South Africa, Churchill was captured by the Boers during a scouting expedition. He managed to escape from the prison camp and travelled approximately 300 miles to Mozambique, despite a reward being offered for his recapture, dead or alive.
Churchill popularised the "V for Victory" sign, which became a well-known symbol during WWII. The gesture, made by raising the index and middle fingers to form a "V," was used to symbolize defiance against the Axis Powers and became an iconic symbol of the war effort.
